La Unión Gulf Tour – 2-Day Adventure to the Gulf of Fonseca & Aconcagua Volcano
The La Unión Gulf Tour is a two-day semi-independent adventure designed for travelers who want to explore the fascinating eastern region of El Salvador. This area is known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, island-dotted waters, and peaceful coastal communities. With a combination of scenic land excursions, island exploration, and time to enjoy the warm waters of the Gulf of Fonseca, this tour offers an unforgettable experience that is ideal for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Day 1 – Departure from San Salvador & Aconcagua Volcano Experience
Your journey begins at 7:00 AM, with pick-up from selected hotels in San Salvador. As you travel east toward La Unión, your guide will share insights about the region’s culture, history, and natural beauty. The eastern part of El Salvador is less visited than the western and central areas, making it perfect for travelers who enjoy discovering places that are still untouched and authentic.
By midday, you will arrive in La Unión, a coastal town located on one of the most picturesque bays in Central America. After a short break, you will embark on an exciting 4×4 excursion to Conchagua Volcano. This off-road experience takes you through rural landscapes, small villages, and scenic lookout points. Once you reach higher ground, you will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, the Gulf of Fonseca, and neighboring volcanic formations. The Aconcagua area is known for its rugged terrain and dramatic scenery, offering excellent opportunities for photos and exploration.
After the excursion, you will return to La Unión and check in at your hotel. The evening is free for you to relax, walk around town, enjoy local cuisine, or simply rest in preparation for the next day’s island adventure.
Day 2 – Island Tour of the Gulf of Fonseca & Zacatillo Beach Stop
Your second day begins at 9:00 AM, when you board a boat for a tour of the Gulf of Fonseca, one of the most beautiful and historically important bodies of water in Central America. Shared by El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the gulf features calm waters and dozens of volcanic islands with rich biodiversity and fishing communities.
During the boat ride, your captain will take you close to several islands so you can appreciate their unique landscapes. The region combines volcanic formations, mangroves, fishing boats, and breathtaking views of distant mountains.
A highlight of the day is the visit to Zacatillo Island, known for its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. Here, you’ll have time to swim, relax, sunbathe, or enjoy a fresh seafood lunch prepared on the island. Zacatillo is peaceful and slow-paced, offering a perfect escape from the busy city life.
After enjoying the island, you will return by boat to La Unión, where your transportation back to San Salvador will be waiting. The estimated arrival time back in the capital is late afternoon or early evening.
